“Dolor en Calor,” the new track from Lux Vimdor, a 21-year-old singer-songwriter-producer from Zaragoza, Spain, translates to English as “sadness within the heat.”

This seeming paradox should be familiar to anyone who has experienced grief or anxiety while in the throes of sexual passion.

Vimdor creates the musical equivalent of this emotional tug-of-war by anchoring the bottom on a synth-bass line throbbing like an aroused heartbeat, while the melodic synths on top create melancholy, cinematic chords that wash over the beat.

Similarly, the husky lead vocal in the alto range seems plagued by worry, while the purring, backing vocal in the soprano range sparkles with desire.

The result is less a dancefloor workout than a mini-movie whose female lead is wrestling with the competing emotions of fervor and caution.
